Ctg coordinators urge govt to appoint non-partisan VC at CU
The coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram have requested the government to appoint a non-partisan vice-chancellor (VC) at Chittagong University (CU).
The coordinators placed a 15-point demand at a discussion meeting held between the Liberation War Affairs Adviser Farooq-e-Azam at the Chattogram Circuit House on Saturday (17 July).
During the meeting, the adviser assured that the appointment of a vice chancellor and the administration at CU will be made very soon.
"We have discussed immediate implementation of the demands with the liberation war affairs adviser," Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi, central coordinator of the movement, told The Business Standard today (18 August).
"Our main demand was the swift appointment of a VC for our university. He [the adviser] has assured us of the immediate appointment," he added.
Another central coordinator Russel Ahmed said, "The adviser was quite sincere in fulfilling our demands. We will work together to reform the country. We will be determined to build a corruption-free and beautiful Bangladesh."
Their key demands include swift appointment of a non-partisan VC and academic-oriented administration, a complete ban on student politics in all educational institutions, the dismissal and exemplary punishment of administrative officials involved in violence and oppression during protests, adequate medical treatment for the injured and financial compensation for the families of the deceased, removal of corrupt and partisan officials from educational institutions and constitutional reforms to ensure good governance and democracy.
They also called for a complete overhaul of the education curriculum and increased allocation for education in national budget.
On 20 March, Professor Abu Taher took over as CU VC. He resigned from his post due to the pressure from student protests.
