Dipu Moni arrested in murder case
Former deputy minister in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy was also arrested in the same case
Former social welfare minister Dr Dipu Moni has been arrested in a murder case filed with the Mohammadpur Police Station.
She was arrested from Baridhara DOHS in the capital and taken into the custody of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), a DMP official confirmed the matter to TBS this evening (19 August).
Former deputy minister in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy was also arrested in the same case.
Arif was arrested from Dhanmondi area of the capital tonight, according to the DMP.
They were both arrested under Sections 302/149/34 of the Penal Code.
Dipu Moni served as the education minister in the Awami league government. When reelected on 7 January this year, she served as the social welfare minister.
She was appointed the first female foreign minister of Bangladesh on 6 January 2009, after victory for the Awami League-led Grand Alliance on 29 December 2008.
She is the joint secretary of the Awami League.
Earlier this evening, a deputy commissioner of DB, who did not wish to be named, told TBS, "There is a case against her in Chandpur. It is not possible to say, as of yet, for which case exactly she has been arrested."
Dipu Moni, her brother sued for attacking BNP leader's house in Chandpur
On 15 August, a case was filed against Dipu Moni and her brother Dr JR Wadud Tipu for attacking the residence of Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik, president of the Chandpur District unit BNP.
Besides, 510 known and 1000-1200 unnamed people have been accused in the case.
The case was filed on Thursday following a complaint lodged by A Razzak Hawlader, joint convener of Chandpur Municipal Jubo Dal, said Sheikh Mohsin Alam, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station.
Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik, who was abroad for medical treatment during the attack, claimed the attackers were ill motivated and they did it for taking political revenge.
The incident occurred on the evening of 18 July, when a mob of 1,000 to 1,200 armed individuals reportedly vandalised, looted, and set fire to Manik's Monira Bhaban on J.M. SenGupta Road.
The accused include current and former leaders of the Awami League and affiliated organizations.
Legal proceedings are ongoing while ensuring that innocent individuals are not harassed, said the OC.
