Snakebites surge in flood-hit Lakshmipur, Noakhali
According to medical officers, at least 100 people have sought treatment for snakebites at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital and Noakhali General Hospital over the past weekend
The number of snakebite cases in Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts has surged rapidly in recent days during the ongoing floods.
According to medical officers, at least 100 people have sought treatment for snakebites at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital and Noakhali General Hospital over the past weekend.
Dr Arup Das, resident medical officer at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, told The Business Standard that in the last few days, 63 patients have been treated at the hospital, while two more sought treatment at Ramganj Upazila Health Complex.
"From Friday to today (24 August) 10 patients so far received treatment," he added.
Dr Syed Mahiuddin Abdul Aziz, resident medical officer at Noakhali General Hospital, said, "We have had 35 snakebite cases in the last two days, with several patients needing to be admitted."
According to locals, the flooding, caused by heavy rainfall and the overflow of the Feni's Muhuri river, has submerged eight upazilas in Noakhali, forcing snakes out of their burrows.
As a result, there has been a significant increase in snakebite incidents, especially in remote areas of Kabirhat and Subarnachar upazilas.
In Lakshmipur, 45 unions are currently inundated due to heavy rainfall.
Medical professionals have advised people living in flood-affected areas to exercise caution while working in fields or around their homes and also urged people to seek medical attention immediately if they are bitten by a snake.
