Hearing on Jamaat’s appeal to revive registration set for 21 October
On 1 August 2013, the HC pronounced a verdict cancelling the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party
The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami filed a plea with the Supreme Court today (1 September) to revive an appeal against a High Court verdict that made the registration of the political party illegal some 11 years ago.
The application will now be presented to the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division, said Jamaat's Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir.
"We have filed a petition with the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division to restore the appeal that was cancelled as 'dismiss for default'," Shishir said.
The full bench of the Appellate Division, led by the chief justice, will hear the application on 21 October, according to lawyer Muhammad Shishir Munir, who represented Jamaat in the court.
The Chamber Justice of the Appellate Division Ashfaqul Islam gave the order today.
On 1 August 2013, the HC pronounced a verdict cancelling the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party.
On 7 December 2018, the Election Commission issued a circular in this regard.
Later, Jamaat lawyers appealed against the HC verdict, which got "dismissed for default" by a six-member bench headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan due to the absence of Jamaat's chief lawyer during the hearing on the appeal in November 2023.
As a result, the HC verdict that cancelled the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami remained.
