Salehuddin assures no significant poultry price hike from producers
The Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection and the Competition Commission will ensure that there is no significant increase in poultry prices from the producer to the consumer level, said Finance and Commerce adviser Salehuddin Ahmed.
He made the statement today after a meeting with representatives from the poultry sector at the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce.
Salehuddin said, "We've spoken with small and large producers, traders, and marketers across the country. They told us that recent floods disrupted poultry production. However, producers have promised to restore production levels soon."
"We've told producers they cannot make excessive profits beyond production costs," he added.
The adviser said, "To achieve true development, we need to motivate traders. That's why we're talking with traders from almost all sectors, focusing on how to lower prices for essential goods like eggs, chickens, and chicks."
In response to a question about syndicates, Salehuddin said, "Traders often try to make extra profits. However, we will be able to address this issue moving forward."
He added, "We've told traders that with the recent drop in oil prices, transportation costs should decrease. They must lower their prices. Prices in Bangladesh usually stay high once they increase, but we won't let that happen."
When asked about setting prices for eggs and chickens, the adviser said, "If the situation worsens, we might set prices for eggs and chickens. The Department of Agricultural Marketing can manage this if needed, and the Tariff Commission can provide assistance."
Regarding commodity prices since the new government took office, he said, "Prices aren't too bad right now, but we are working to improve the situation further."
