Environment adviser calls for global cooperation on climate justice
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Ministry, has called for stronger international cooperation in protecting rivers, forests, and wetlands.
Speaking at the 8th IUCN Regional Conservation Forum in Bangkok on Tuesday (3 September), she stressed the urgent need for environmental and climate justice, holding nations accountable for their contributions to climate change and pollution.
Addressing the forum, held under the theme "Reimagining Conservation in Asia: A Nature-Positive Future," Rizwana emphasised a nature-centric approach to biodiversity conservation, urging global discussions on the rights of nature.

She highlighted the importance of ensuring that those responsible for environmental degradation are held accountable and required to provide compensation.
The idea that development and environmental protection are at odds is a misconception, Rizwana said. Achieving the IUCN's vision will demonstrate that these goals can coexist. However, this vision should be regularly updated, with a particular focus on involving youth in every step of the process, said the adviser at the forum.
Rizwana Hasan is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the forum, which runs from September 3 to 5. The delegation includes Iqbal Abdullah Harun, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
The IUCN presented its vision and action plan for the next 20 years at the conference, outlining strategies for achieving a "nature-positive" future in Asia.
