Three-member committee to probe swindling of Tk25 crore from ex-SB chief Monirul’s office
DIG Golam Kibria of the Police Headquarters Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBN) will head the committee
A three-member committee has been formed to investigate allegations that Tk25 crore was swindled from former Special Branch (SB) chief and Additional Inspector General Monirul Islam's office.
DIG Golam Kibria of the Police Headquarters Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBN) will head the committee.
The incident allegedly occurred on 5 August while Monirul Islam was serving as the head of the unit, an official from Police Headquarters confirmed on the condition of anonymity.
"The committee has been tasked with investigating what exactly happened in the former SB chief's office that day and is expected to submit the report as soon as possible," the official added.
According to several police sources, SB chief Monirul had brought Tk25 crore from the Awami League-government on 3 August to suppress the anti-discrimination student movement, and the money was stored in his office.
"However, before it could be distributed, the AL-government was toppled by the student uprising on 5 August. Monirul stopped coming to the office after that day. Some SB officials, aware of the Tk25 crore in his room, allegedly disabled the closed-circuit cameras and internet at the SB office and removed the money sometime between 6 and 12 August," said the sources.
