Beef now selling at Tk620 per kg in Shariatpur
Traders say three months ago, beef was priced at Tk750 per kg in Palang Bazaar
Beef is being sold at Tk620 per kg in Shariatpur's Palang Bazaar, reduced by Tk80 to Tk100 per kg compared to previous market prices, as local meat traders implemented the new pricing last Friday.
The announcement of the price reduction was made earlier in the district town using loudspeakers.
A visit to Palang Bazaar on Wednesday (11 September) morning found a large crowd at the meat shops, with many low-income buyers opting for beef over fish due to high fish prices. Customers who typically bought 1 kg or 2 kg of beef are now purchasing more.
Traders say three months ago, beef was priced at Tk750 per kg in Palang Bazaar. It was later reduced to Tk720 per kg, and following the anti-discrimination student movement, the price dropped to Tk700.
Recently, traders have voluntarily reduced beef prices by up to Tk100 per kg, they added.
A buyer, Zahid Hasan, said, "Where I used to buy 1 kg, I bought 2 kg today because of the lower price. If the price could be set at Tk600 per kg, middle-class and low-income people could regularly afford beef to meet their protein needs."
Kabir Sikder, owner of Sikdar Meat House in Palang Bazaar, said for the past month, customer interest in buying meat had significantly declined. "Due to the drop in demand, we often couldn't sell meat even after it sat out all day," he said.
"To boost buyer interest, we traders decided to sell meat at the purchase price, excluding profit margins. Now, customers are once again showing interest in buying meat," he added.
