Elections after specific reforms through political dialogue: Rizwana

The upcoming elections will only take place after necessary reforms are implemented, Environment, Forest, Climate Change Syeda Rizwana Hasan said today (12 September).

"We're thinking about elections after taking specific commitments on reforms or bringing specific amendments in some cases by reaching a political consensus through dialogues," the adviser said while replying to a question at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy.

"The political parties have already made it clear that they would go for election after reforms."

Rizwana, also the Water Resources adviser, said there were two main aspirations behind the mass uprising – one, to end rampant discrimination, and the other, much-needed reforms.

Referring to the formation of six commissions to reform six key sectors, she said, "We initially expect that the commissions would place their reports within three months."

"The implementation of the recommendations to be placed by the six commissions will depend on whether the government can build a political consensus on these. We'll go for dialogue at one stage.

"The cabinet division will provide secretarial assistance to the six reform commissions," she added.

'Govt trying to solve power cuts within 2-3 weeks'

The adviser said the interim government is trying to solve the power outage problem within the next two-three weeks.

She said the load-shedding issue was discussed in the advisory council meeting held with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus in the chair at his office today.

"We'll try to reach a solution to this problem within two-three weeks," Rizwana said.

RMG unrest to be under control soon: Adviser Asif

Adviser to the Ministry of Labour and Employment Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said the government expects that the ongoing unrest in the country's readymade garment sector would be resolved soon.

"We hope the unrest will come under control soon," he said at the briefing.

He said workers never attack their workplaces as if a factory is closed, they would have to suffer the most.

"Till now we've not found any instance of workers attacking their factories. Rather we came to know that the workers came out and resisted attacks carried out under the banner of 'Bekar Jubo

Sangha' (unemployed youth association)," he said.

He said a man of Bekar Jubo Sangha was arrested from Netrakona who was a posted leader of Chhatra League in the area.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also spoke at the press briefing.
