Erosion hits Jamuna embankment in Sirajganj: 70 metres of damaged area repaired
However, the Water Development Board (WDB) has reported that the situation is now under control
Erosion has occurred on the Jamuna River embankment in the Old Meghai area of Kazipur Upazila, Sirajganj, causing a 70-metre section of the embankment to collapse.
However, the Water Development Board (WDB) has reported that the situation is now under control.
The erosion began on the evening of Saturday (14 September), and by yesterday morning (15 September), the embankment had been compromised with 70 metres of it washed away into the river.
Upon receiving the news, WDB officials arrived at the scene early Sunday morning and initiated geo-bag dumping to control the erosion.
Nazmul Hossain, sub-divisional engineer of the Sirajganj Water Development Board, explained that the reduction in river water levels had exposed riverbanks and caused a strong current, which, despite the water level being significantly below flood danger levels, led to the erosion at the base of the embankment.
He further stated that emergency measures, including the placement of geo-bags, were implemented quickly to halt the erosion. The repair work, which also involved members of the Bangladesh Army, has successfully brought the situation under control.
Hossain expressed confidence that the erosion risk has been fully managed and that there is no further threat of damage.
