Waterlogging in Kushtia as it records year's highest rainfall
Heavy downpour over Kushtia for four consecutive days resulted in the district's highest rainfall recorded this year.
In the last 24 hours, 128.4 milliliters of rain was recorded till 12pm today, said Mamun-ur-Rashid, an official of the district's Agro Meteorological Observatory.
The first instance of record highest rainfall was on 12 July with 111 mm. That exceeded between 12pm on Saturday till 12pm yesterday with 113 mm of rain.
The weather expert attributes the continuous rainfall to the impact of a low pressure/depression forming over the Bay of Bengal.
Aside from the statistics, life and agriculture in the district have witnessed disruptions and damages alike.
Daulatpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Nurul Islam told TBS, "So far, we have received an estimate of damage in about 80 hectares of land. We received accounts of damage to bananas, cotton, peppers, and some other vegetable crop fields."
Kumarkhali upazila farmer Aziz Miah said due to heavy rains, the crop fields of his area were completely submerged in water.
A Mirpur area resident Md Rafiq said he was unable to find raw food to feed his cattle.
Day labourers, school and office goers have not been able to commute as most streets are water-logged in several areas of the city.
A rickshaw puller named Abdur Alim said he was unable to get on with his work as people barely stepped out for commute due to the inclement weather.
