The Ganosamhati Andolon, led by Zonayed Saki, has been registered as a political party with the Election Commission (EC).
The left-leaning party has been granted the electoral symbol of 'Matthal', a type of conical hat popular in rural areas, according to a gazette notification issued by the EC Secretariat today (17 September).
The EC has registered Ganosamhati Andolon as a political party as per a ruling and order of the High Court, until further notice.
Formed in 2002, the party applied to the EC on 28 December 2017 for registration as a political party. However, their application was not granted.
Saki, the chief coordinator of the party, later filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the EC's decision.
After hearing from both parties, the High Court directed to register Ganosamhati Andolon as a political party within 30 days on 11 April 2019.
The EC later appealed against the HC order with the Appellate Division. However, the appeal was withdrawn on 10 September 2024.a
