Polythene to be banned in kitchen markets from 1 Nov: Syeda Rizwana Hasan
“This time, the ban on polythene bags will be strictly enforced across all types of kitchen markets. Operations will also be carried out in factories to prevent further production of such bags,” said Hasan
Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan announced that a nationwide anti-polythene drive will be launched in all kitchen markets starting from 1 November, following the implementation of the ban in all superstores from 1 October.
Those found using polythene will face legal consequences.
She made this statement during an event held at Mohammadpur Town Hall today (24 September).
To strictly enforce the existing ban on polythene shopping bags, polyethylene, or polypropylene products, the adviser inaugurated a clean-up campaign in the kitchen markets, distributing alternative items to polythene and setting up bins to collect polythene bags and other polythene-based packaging materials.
"This time, the ban on polythene bags will be strictly enforced across all types of kitchen markets. Operations will also be carried out in factories to prevent further production of such bags," said Hasan.
She further discussed the challenges and possibilities of the ban on polythene shopping bags with local dignitaries in an informal discussion.
Earlier, on 9 September, Syeda Rizwana announced that from 1 October, superstores will no longer be allowed to store or distribute any type of polythene or polypropylene bags to customers.
