Gwalior bans protests ahead of India vs Bangladesh T20I
On Wednesday, the right-wing organisation protested against the match, citing alleged "atrocities" against Hindus in Bangladesh, which have led to significant unrest and political changes in that country since August.
In anticipation of the first T20I match between India and Bangladesh on 6 October, prohibitory orders have been imposed in Gwalior to ensure a peaceful environment.
The district magistrate has banned protests and the dissemination of inflammatory material, particularly on social media. These measures will remain in effect until 7 October, following a call for a 'Gwalior bandh' issued by the Hindu Mahasabha, alongside planned protests from other groups.
On Wednesday, the right-wing organisation protested against the match, citing alleged "atrocities" against Hindus in Bangladesh, which have led to significant unrest and political changes in that country since August.
District Magistrate and Collector Ruchika Chauhan enacted the prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), a new code that replaced the British-era Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in July, based on recommendations from the Superintendent of Police.
The Superintendent expressed concern over various organisations planning processions, demonstrations, and effigy burnings in response to the match, which could incite communal tensions. He noted that objectionable content shared on social media was contributing to a volatile atmosphere.
To maintain peace and order in the Madhya Pradesh district, the Superintendent recommended these prohibitory measures. Under the new orders, anyone found inciting unrest via social media will face action. The display of banners, posters, and other materials featuring inflammatory messages is also prohibited.
Public gatherings of five or more people, as well as the possession of firearms and sharp weapons such as swords and spears, are banned during this period. The use of flammable substances, including kerosene, petrol, and acid, is restricted within a 200-metre radius of all buildings.
The T20I clash will take place at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium, which has not hosted an international match in 14 years. To ensure security and manage traffic, approximately 1,600 police officers will be deployed for the event.
