For Goutom Saha, a renowned fashion designer and stylist, the vivid memories of his childhood in the picturesque city of Mymensingh shapes his artistic vision. There, the Puja festivities were a dazzling spectacle, but it was the community spirit that truly captivated him.
"People from all walks of life would come together," he reminisces. "In the midst of all that excitement, gazing at the beautiful statue of Maa Durga filled our hearts with the belief that goodness triumphs over evil. We dressed joyously — red and white were essential."
Now, based in Dhaka, Saha finds the urban Puja scene to be more about 'flexing,' a term that resonates with today's youth.

"Sure, people dress better and shop more, but there's a certain simplicity that seems to have vanished," he reflects.
The fashion connoisseur's perspective
With over two decades in the fashion industry as a designer, choreographer, and stylist, Saha has a discerning eye for brands that elevate Puja fashion. "Aarong and Bishworang deserve accolades for embodying the spirit of Puja through their collections, presentations, and campaigns," he asserts.
Walking through the bustling markets, Saha's sentiments ring true. Aarong, a fashion powerhouse, has won hearts with a bold red palette, dominating everything from sarees to panjabis. This year, their Puja collection transforms store interiors into festive wonderlands, each piece echoing the themes of Shashthi to Dashami.
Tanvir Hossain, Chief Business Officer at Aarong, elaborates, "Our collection beautifully blends tradition with a rich colour palette, featuring iconic reds and whites. It includes handwoven sarees, sophisticated ethnic wear, contemporary menswear, vibrant children's attire, and intricate jewellery. Exquisite home décor pieces enhance the festive experience."
A tribute to Bengal's heritage
From Narayanganj, the epicentre of fabrics and traditional sarees, comes Bishworang, founded by the visionary Biplob Saha. A former 'Charukola' (Faculty of Fine Arts) student, he has captivated fashion enthusiasts with his vibrant colour palettes and innovative marketing that captures the essence of Puja. Though the signature beauty pageant 'Rang er Didi' hasn't graced the scene recently, its legacy lingers.
"For 29 years, Bishworang has celebrated Bengal's history, heritage, and culture through creative designs and exceptional craftsmanship," Biplob states. This year, the brand's 'Durga Puja 2024' collection features motifs inspired by Durga idols, encapsulating nature's beauty through graphic geometric forms.
Keeping the weather in mind, the outfits are mostly made of breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and viscose. The collection also includes luxurious materials such as silk and chiffon, ensuring elegance and comfort.
As Goutom Saha notes, the festive spirit calls for thematic dressing. "On Shashthi, the day of Bodhon, opt for white or light pink," he suggests. Ashtami brings a vibrant palette, culminating in the crescendo of Dashami when Devi Durga departs, leaving a poignant sense of loss.
Rituals and trends
Abir Khela, a cherished ritual among women on the eve of Dashami, symbolises blessings for a happy marital life.
"Wearing red and white is essential, with gold jewellery signifying Maa Lakshmi's blessings," Saha explains. Yet, the trends are evolving; while sarees remain staples, contemporary options are gaining traction.
Brands like KlubHaus and Sailor are stepping up to offer modern takes on Puja fashion. KlubHaus has infused its collection with rickshaw art motifs, showcasing vibrant colours that resonate with festive exuberance. Their signature saree-pant fusion for kids is both playful and stylish.
