CAB raises concern over Ctg Wasa's corruption probe, alleges manipulation by its MD's team
Ctg Wasa MD AKM Fazlullah was appointed on a 16-year contractual basis during the Hasina-led government.
The Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has expressed concern over the investigation into irregularities and corruption at Chattogram Wasa, claiming the probe is being influenced by the management of the water body's managing director (MD).
"An investigation into Chattogram Wasa's irregularities and corruption cannot proceed effectively while its MD AKM Fazlullah remains in his position," CAB Vice President SM Nazer Hossain said in a statement today (7 September).
He alleged that the investigation led by a team from Local Government Division is merely a facade, designed to protect the accused rather than uncover the truth.
"The team, under the influence of Wasa itself, has been conducting a mere show in the name of investigation. They cannot conduct a fair and impartial probe."
The CAB vice president also said employees are unlikely to disclose information about irregularities and corruption while working under the MD.
"To ensure a thorough investigation, he must first be removed from his position. Only then will a comprehensive inquiry be possible," he added.
He further stated, "CAB believes that Chattogram Wasa needs reforms. By removing the MD, the organised irregularities and corruption will be revealed, and Wasa will become a customer-friendly organisation."
AKM Fazlullah was appointed on a 16-year contractual basis during the Hasina-led government.
"During this time, he has increased water prices more than 14 times, burdening the people of Chattogram. Even now, one-third of the city is deprived of water. Every project implemented and ongoing in Wasa has been riddled with irregularities and corruption," CAB vice president said.
