RMG workers block Chandra-Nabinagar road in Gazipur demanding bonus, allowance

Workers of a ready-made garment (RMG) factory in Gazipur's Jirani area today (5 October) staged a demonstration on the Chandra-Nabinagar road, demanding attendance bonus, tiffin allowance, and annual leave pay, Industrial Police said.
Around 9am, RMG workers of Irish Fashion Ltd blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar road adjacent to the factory, causing traffic congestion in both directions.
"The road was blocked for over two hours. After negotiations with the workers, they were cleared from the road," Gazipur Industrial Police Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Deepak Chandra Majumdar told The Business Standard.
"Subsequently, traffic returned to normal on the Chandra-Nabinagar road around 4pm," the ASP added.
Sarwar Alam, superintendent of police (SP) of Gazipur Industrial Zone-2, said no labour unrest was reported anywhere else in the district till 2pm except for one factory in Jirani.
"Eight factories in the district, which were previously closed for various reasons, remained closed today. We are working to ensure overall security in the industrial area," he added.
The SP further said, "However, workers of various factories in Chandona, Vogra, Itahata, Konabari, and Chandra areas of Kaliakair upazila reported for work in the morning despite light rain from 8am.
"Industrial police, army, and BGB are patrolling to maintain law and order in the industrial area."
