'We shelter anyone' if life at risk: Army chief
“We shelter anyone if someone’s life is in danger, regardless of their caste or creed.”
Amid reports of the Bangladesh Army providing shelter to Awami League leaders following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has acknowledged the situation.
At a press briefing in Rajshahi today, General Waker said, "We shelter anyone if someone's life is in danger, regardless of their caste or creed."
He added, "If there is any complaint or case filed against them, they will certainly be punished."
He underscored that the Army does not condone extrajudicial actions or attacks, saying, "We offered shelter if we believed their lives were at risk. We will do this for anyone, irrespective of their party, ideology, or religion."
Addressing the issue of police returning to work, General Waker said, "The police have experienced trauma due to the attacks on officials. Once they overcome this trauma, they will be able to perform their duties properly again. Police have already resumed work in various stations, and we are providing them with protection."
The Army chief also noted that there is currently no external pressure from other countries regarding the situation in Bangladesh.
"Everyone understands the current circumstances. However, there have been some discussions on minority issues. A total of 30 places in 20 districts were affected by unrest related to minority issues, which is unacceptable. Those involved in such crimes must be brought to justice," he said.
Regarding the burning of an army vehicle in Gopalganj, General Waker suggested it was likely a misunderstanding.
He added, "The situation is now under control. Their leaders have spoken with us, but those responsible for this crime will be investigated, held accountable, and tried according to the law."
