Releasing upstream water without warning shows India’s inhumanity, non-cooperation: Nahid
He stated that people of Bangladesh are angry due to India’s policy and demanded fair share of water
Posts, telecommunications and information technology, and information and broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam has accused India of inhumanity by releasing upstream water without prior warning, causing severe flooding in Bangladesh.
Nahid made the remarks while talking to reporters regarding the worsening flood situation in the country during a brief press briefing at state guesthouse Jamuna today. The briefing was held after the advisory council's meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.
"The dam was opened without any prior warning and without giving us any scope for preparation," he said, adding that this action exemplifies India's lack of cooperation with Bangladesh.
He further said, "We hope India will soon abandon such anti-people policies towards Bangladesh."
"Students and citizens of Bangladesh are outraged by such policies of India's. A proper solution must be found to protect the people of both nations from such natural disasters," he added.
He emphasised that the relationship between Bangladesh and India should remain unstrained, and that bilateral relations must be established on a basis of fairness.
Nahid Islam also called for unity in tackling the country's flood situation, drawing a parallel with the unity shown during the national uprising.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser for the ministries of environment, forest and climate change, and water resources, and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, adviser for the ministries of youth and sports, and labour and employment also spoke at the briefing.
