Ahmad Hossain, M Sohail placed on 4-day remand
A Dhaka court today placed Awami League Organising Secretary Ahmad Hossain and former chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority Rear Admiral (retd) Mohammad Sohail on four-day remands each in a case related to the killing of a Jubo Dal leader during the recent student movement.
On the same day, AB Tajul Islam, former state minister for Liberation War affairs, was also remanded for nine days in a murder case filed in his home district of Brahmanbaria 21 months ago.
He was arrested in the Banashree area of the capital on Tuesday night and subsequently transported to Brahmanbaria.
Besides, journalist couple Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa, who were recently dismissed from Ekattor TV, were arrested from the Dhaka airport on charges of incitement to murder during the student movement.
Awami League lawmakers, ministers, and beneficiaries of the 15-year long Hasina regime are being booked one by one following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August amid a mass uprising.
Ahmed, Sohail accused of being masterminds
Sub-inspector Nazmul Hassan, the investigating officer of the case, sought a ten-day remand for Ahmad Hossain, and Mohammad Sohail, who were arrested in the capital on Tuesday night.
In a forwarding letter to the court, he stated that when students took to the streets, unidentified miscreants, with the plan and indirect support of the defendants, indiscriminately fired at the protesters.
As a result, Md Nabin Talukder, 40, the husband of the plaintiff, was seriously injured and later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The investigating officer further said they have evidence of Ahmed planning the attack and instructing unidentified individuals while abusing his power as a ruling party lawmaker.
Sohail, also a former spokesperson of Rapid Action Battalion, allegedly used the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre and various technologies to apply force to suppress the movement.
The remand is necessary to extract precise information, recover evidence used in the incident, and uncover the true nature of the crime, he added.
Shakil, Rupa face charges of incitement to murder
Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa, formerly the chief news editor and chief correspondent, respectively, at Ekattor TV, were arrested on charges of incitement to murder and aiding and abetting murder.
The journalist couple was apprehended by police at Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday as they attempted to leave the country with their daughter.
Obaidur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of the DMP's Media Wing, confirmed that the arrests were made following a case filed with the Uttara East Police Station.
According to reports, the couple was scheduled to fly to Paris via Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight, but immigration authorities detained them after failing to receive clearance from the Special Branch of police.
Notably, Shakil and Farzana were dismissed from their positions at Ekattor TV on 8 August.
